The Solco Competition in Castel Morrone is an ancient tradition with roots in peasant culture, combining sacred and profane elements. During the competition, teams of participants trace a furrow, starting from the hills and crossing woods and fields, as a sign of devotion to Our Lady of Mercy. The furrow must overcome obstacles such as hedges and houses, and the competition culminates on September 8th with a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Monte Castello, where a committee evaluates the furrows and declares the best one.
Originally, the furrows were traced with a plow pulled by oxen, symbolizing skill in taming the animals and guiding the plow. Over time, men replaced the oxen, using the strength of their arms and agricultural tools. This practice, passed down from generation to generation, has survived despite the lack of documented historical sources, testifying to its cultural and community importance.
